The New York Giants’ 2024 season has been nothing short of disastrous, with a 3-13 record entering the last week and no apparent route for the future.

Giants’ Kayvon Thibodeaux wants Brian Daboll back next season

The issues this season extend beyond just the head coach and general manager. However, due to the team’s decline in recent years, there is potential for the organization to make significant changes, possibly parting ways with head coach Brian Daboll or general manager Joe Schoen. After making the playoffs in 2022, the Giants have posted a 9-24 record since, ranking as the third-worst in the league.

Nonetheless, some Giants players are backing Daboll to stay on as head coach next season. Edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, drafted prior to Daboll’s first season in 2022, expressed his support for Daboll’s return.

“He’s a great coach,” Thibodeaux said, according to Athlon Sports’ Anthony Licciardi. “It’s sports, and in the NFL, some things are out of your control. We all impact each other, including the coaches, with our performance. I love him as a coach. He’s a player’s coach with great philosophies. Sometimes things don’t work out in a season, but I have complete confidence in the organization and the coaching staff.”

Daboll has had a rough 2024 season

Daboll assumed the offensive play-calling duties this season, but the results have been disappointing. Heading into Week 18, the Giants are averaging just 16.3 points per game, the second-lowest in the NFL, with only the Cleveland Browns scoring fewer.

Tensions rose earlier in the season when the Giants benched and then released quarterback Daniel Jones, a move that was met with player dissatisfaction and was seen by many as the organization signaling the end of the season. This decision was followed by a brutal stretch of blowout losses, culminating in a 10-game losing streak. That streak was snapped last week when the Giants unexpectedly defeated the Colts 45-33 at MetLife Stadium, earning their first and only home win of the season. While the win may have cost them a shot at the first overall pick, it could also have helped Daboll retain his job for next season.

The future for both Daboll and the Giants is uncertain. Much will depend on the outcome of Week 18, where a win against the Eagles could secure Daboll’s position and set him up to lead a likely revamped roster next season.
