Free agent third baseman Alex Bregman is widely considered the top position player available on the market. While a return to the Houston Astros hasn’t been ruled out entirely, it appears unlikely. Could this create the perfect chance for the Boston Red Sox to swoop in with a lucrative offer?

The Astros have already begun planning for life without Bregman at third base, acquiring Isaac Paredes via trade and signing Christian Walker to play first. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have emerged as a potential destination for the two-time All-Star slugger for several reasons. Bregman’s right-handed bat would fill a key need in manager Alex Cora’s lineup, which the team has been looking to address throughout the offseason. The 30-year-old could slot in at second base or take over third, allowing Rafael Devers to shift to first base.

Beyond his versatility, Bregman’s postseason pedigree as a two-time World Series champion would provide invaluable experience for Boston’s roster. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden has identified the Red Sox as the frontrunner for Bregman’s services. “Boston feels like the best fit for Bregman, who turns 31 in March. They need a right-handed power hitter, and his pull-hitting approach would thrive with Fenway Park’s Green Monster in left field,” Bowden wrote. “He could either move Rafael Devers to first and put Triston Casas at DH or play second base full-time. His leadership and ability to grind out at-bats would greatly benefit this young team and help them push for a postseason return.”

Bregman is reportedly seeking a deal worth around $200 million. Earlier this offseason, The Athletic’s Tim Britton projected a seven-year, $189 million contract for the nine-year veteran.
