The Houston Astros are facing a bullpen shortage and are in dire need of reinforcements. While they already have Josh Hader and Ryan Pressly anchoring the back end, adding another high-leverage reliever should be a priority. A prime candidate for the role is two-time All-Star closer Kirby Yates, who spent 2024 with the Texas Rangers and could be the perfect fit for the Astros’ needs.

Yates, a right-hander, complements Hader, a lefty, and could form a dominant late-inning tandem. In 2024, Yates recorded 33 saves in 34 opportunities—a near-perfect performance. By comparison, Hader, despite finishing with 34 saves, had 38 chances and displayed inconsistency. Hader’s struggles were especially evident in April, July, and August, when his ERA exceeded 5.00, though he showed flashes of brilliance with a 1.35 ERA in May.

Having Yates as a backup closer would provide the Astros with much-needed flexibility. If Hader falters, Yates could seamlessly take over the role, similar to how Aroldis Chapman replaced David Bednar as the Pirates’ closer in 2024. This depth would be crucial for a team aiming to return to the World Series or advance beyond the Wild Card round.

Adding Yates, projected to earn a reasonable $6 million in 2025, would be a smart, low-risk move that strengthens a critical area for Houston. Given his elite performance last season, the Astros should act quickly to secure him and bolster their chances for postseason success.
