MLB Network: Angels Ace Makes Shocking Return to Kansas City Royals
After spending the last four seasons with multiple teams, former Angels starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen has found some stability, re-signing with the Kansas City Royals for the 2025 season. Lorenzen’s deal is worth $7 million for one year, with a $12 million mutual option for 2026. The $7 million salary marks the highest annual average value of his career, surpassing the $6.75 million he earned with the Angels in 2022.
The Royals brought Lorenzen back after an impressive late-season performance in 2024, where he showcased his versatility and strong clubhouse presence. At 33, Lorenzen has evolved as a pitcher, refining his arsenal since his days with the Angels. While his 2022 season in Los Angeles was hindered by fatigue, injuries, and declining fastball velocity, Lorenzen began developing his off-speed pitches into serious weapons. His slider, in particular, has become a standout pitch, and he increasingly relied on his cutter in 2024, helping him post an off-speed run value in the 97th percentile.
Originally drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft, Lorenzen spent seven seasons in Cincinnati before joining the Angels as a full-time starter in 2022. His journey since then included stints with the Tigers and Phillies in 2023—when he earned his first All-Star nod—and the Rangers and Royals in 2024, where he posted a career-high 2.6 bWAR.
Despite recent speculation about his potential as a two-way player, Lorenzen’s new role with the Royals is expected to focus solely on pitching. His return signals a commitment to staying with a contender where he flourished last season, opting for continuity over exploring opportunities with teams like the White Sox or Marlins.
