ESPN: 49ers Lock In Franchise QB with $230 Million Contract
When you consider the value that Brock Purdy has brought to the San Francisco 49ers, it’s remarkable—unless, of course, you’re part of the 49ers’ front office.
Purdy’s story is a testament to the unpredictable nature of the NFL. While he’s not at Tom Brady’s level of transforming from an overlooked draft pick to the greatest of all time, Purdy’s journey from the very last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft to a franchise quarterback for one of the NFL’s most successful teams is nothing short of inspiring.
It’s a story so incredible it’s almost hard to believe—yet it’s unfolding right before our eyes.
The 49ers had a rough 6-11 season and missed the playoffs for the fourth time under coach Kyle Shanahan, but the future remains promising for the team. A lot of that optimism stems from General Manager John Lynch and Shanahan, who are widely regarded as two of the best in the league at their jobs. There’s also excitement surrounding Purdy’s future.
Despite his “Mr. Irrelevant” draft status, Purdy led the 49ers to the Super Bowl last season, and many believe he could take them there again, as long as Lynch and Shanahan continue to surround him with the right pieces. While Purdy may not have the athleticism of Lamar Jackson or the exceptional talent of Josh Allen, he is a reliable passer who excels at reading defenses and executing Shanahan’s offense.
The 49ers’ offense has long been run-heavy, even famously throwing only eight passes in an NFC Championship Game win over the Green Bay Packers in 2019, but it still requires the quarterback to make timely and accurate decisions. Purdy has done just that, and all signs point to the 49ers wanting him to continue leading the team for the long haul.
Currently, Purdy is on a four-year rookie contract worth $934,253 annually, but now that his deal is nearing its final year, he is eligible for an extension. Lynch and the 49ers seem ready to negotiate.
Lynch expressed confidence in Purdy, stating, “What we know about Brock is that he’s our guy. We have interest in Brock being around here for a long time. He’s done so much for our organization; he’s won big games and had a tougher task this year with everything that happened. Despite the challenges, he continued to lead and play at a high level, so we’re very interested in him sticking around.” Lynch also mentioned that the team plans to prioritize this discussion in the coming weeks.
Purdy echoed Lynch’s sentiments, saying, “More than anything, I want to handle business the right way, do it respectfully, and get back to my team as quickly as I can. That’s my mindset and focus. I want to help the team, and of course, we’ll handle things properly as others get their deals done.”
