NHL analyst Mike Johnson has proposed the former Toronto Maple Leafs center, as a potential trade target this season. He currently with the Nashville Predators, could be an appealing option for the Maple Leafs as they search for a depth center with term. Johnson believes O’Reilly checks multiple boxes for Toronto’s GM, Brad Treliving, given the team’s familiarity with him and his ability to fit their needs.

However, it’s uncertain whether O’Reilly would be open to leaving the Predators or whether a return to Toronto is even on the table. Speaking on TSN Radio 1050’s “First Up,” Johnson described O’Reilly as his top trade target, noting his value as a veteran forward who signed a four-year, $18 million contract with Nashville this past offseason. “He might be my number one choice,” Johnson said.

O’Reilly’s versatility and production make him a compelling candidate for the Leafs, who need secondary scoring. Currently playing on Nashville’s second line, O’Reilly has contributed 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists) in 38 games this season. His ability to play in various roles throughout the lineup and his consistent performance throughout his career make him an attractive option for a team looking to bolster its roster.

The Maple Leafs Want Reliability and Energy

Johnson remarked, “We know that he is respected by the group. We know he has a solid relationship with the coach and the system, and he has previously won this manner.” He adds:

“The Leafs need offence right now. They cannot go grab a defensive or energetic player. Any trade acquisition should not only offer new energy and life to the club, but they must also be able to score. “O’Reilly fits that description.”

Frustrating Return Home, Predators Honor Ryan O'Reilly | The Game Nashville

O’Reilly has a $4.5 million cap cost and two years left on his contract after this season. The salary cap will make it difficult to make the move, and the Predators will have to be exceedingly cautious about money retention. LTIR money may be required to create space.
Is this something that feels real? Perhaps not, given the large number of unknowns involved in this exchange. However, if the Predators continue to struggle and O’Reilly is receptive to the possibility, there may be something here worth investigating.
It’s important to remember that O’Reilly decided to leave the Maple Leafs for Nashville. That could be an indication that he does not want to return.
