JUST NOW: Orioles claim right-handed reliever from Angels on waivers
Right-hander is on the move once again this offseason, joining his fifth team since 2024. The Orioles claimed him off waivers from the Reds earlier today. Out of minor league options, the 25-year-old will likely head into spring training competing for a spot in Baltimore’s bullpen.
Contreras spent last season with the Pirates and Angels, pitching to a 4.33 ERA and a 1.288 WHIP over 37 appearances, including three starts. Since debuting with the Pirates in 2021—where he pitched three scoreless innings in his lone start—Contreras has compiled a 4.72 ERA across 90 career games.
Originally signed by the Yankees in 2016, Contreras was traded to the Pirates in the 2021 Jameson Taillon deal. He was later selected by the Angels in May 2024, claimed by the Rangers on October 31, and picked up by the Reds on December 19. Cincinnati designated him for assignment this week after acquiring infielder Gavin Lux. Contreras has struggled since 2023, posting a 5.47 ERA, an 18.5% strikeout rate, and a 10.5% walk rate.
Notably, Contreras earned a spot in the All-Star Futures Game following his trade to Pittsburgh but missed significant time with a right forearm strain. His tenure with the Pirates ended in May 2024 when they promoted top prospect Paul Skenes, and the Rangers also DFA’d him after re-signing Nathan Eovaldi.
To clear room for Contreras on their 40-man roster, the Orioles designated infielder Livan Soto for assignment. Soto, acquired at last year’s trade deadline from the Reds, appeared in 12 games for Baltimore, going 3-for-10. A crowded infield likely limited his chances to make the Opening Day roster barring injuries.
In related news, the Diamondbacks claimed catcher René Pinto off waivers. Pinto had been designated for assignment by the Orioles last Friday after the signing of starter Charlie Morton. Previously claimed from the Rays in November, Pinto’s departure leaves Baltimore with three catchers on the 40-man roster: Adley Rutschman, Gary Sánchez, and Blake Hunt.
