Reds starter Hunter Greene’s classy gesture to LA wildfire victims that left fans in shock
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene is stepping up to support victims of the Los Angeles wildfires. Born and raised in Southern California, Greene is offering assistance to baseball players affected by the devastating fires that have destroyed numerous homes.
On Monday, the former second overall draft pick shared on X that he is providing free baseball cleats to travel ball, high school, and college players impacted by the Palisades, Malibu, and Altadena fires. He wrote:
“I’ve got FREE baseball cleats (Value $100 a pair NEW, Metal Spikes ONLY, sizes 9.5-15) for all the travel ball, high school and college baseball players affected by the Palisades, Malibu, and Altadena fires. Must show proof of residency. Reach out to my community service team manager, Melissa here on my direct message. MUST pickup at my Santa Clarita, CA warehouse. Spread the word, while supplies last.”
According to CBS, the fires have claimed 24 lives, burned over 23,000 acres, and forced 92,000 Los Angeles County residents to evacuate. The Eaton Fire near Pasadena has also destroyed more than 14,000 acres. Greene’s hometown of Sherman Oaks is among the areas under evacuation orders, making the crisis personal for the 25-year-old pitcher.
Greene, who starred at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, had an outstanding 2024 MLB season, finishing with a 9-5 record, a 2.75 ERA, and 26 starts. He earned his first All-Star selection and placed eighth in NL Cy Young voting, showcasing his potential as one of the league’s premier young arms.
As the Reds look to end their playoff drought, which dates back to 2020, Greene could be a key factor in their resurgence. The team, which finished 77-85 last season, recently hired veteran manager Terry Francona to lead them in 2025.
