Virginia Tech Lands Dynamic WR in Huge Recruiting Win
The Virginia Tech Hokies have had an incredible week. Three players declared their plans to move to Virginia Tech on Monday, which marked the beginning of it. After two additional pledges, the Hokies signed a gifted and seasoned wide receiver on Friday.
Donavon Greene, a wide receiver for Wake Forest, made the announcement on Instagram that he was going to Blacksburg. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Donavon Greene was a four-star recruit from Mount Airy High School in Mount Airy, North Carolina, in 2019. At the time, he was one of the highest-ranked prospects ever signed by Wake Forest. After redshirting his first year, Greene started all eight games in 2020, recording 29 receptions for 582 yards (20.1 YPR) and two touchdowns.
Injuries sidelined Greene for the entire 2021 and 2023 seasons, but when healthy, he showcased his talent. In 2022, he tallied 37 catches for 642 yards (17.4 YPR) and six touchdowns. The 2024 season saw Greene make 23 receptions for 380 yards (16.5 YPR) and three touchdowns.
While injuries have been a challenge, Greene has proven to be a standout player with excellent size and speed. He is expected to step into Virginia Tech’s starting lineup in 2025, providing much-needed experience. With the Hokies losing key receivers like Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton, Ali Jennings, and Stephen Gosnell to the NFL draft and others transferring, Greene’s arrival is timely. Rising junior Ayden Green, along with freshmen Brodie Adams and Chanz Wiggins, are also poised to step up, while prized recruit Snook Peterkin could play a significant role next season.
Additionally, the Hokies landed the top player from Virginia, Cameron Seldon, through the transfer portal. Seldon is expected to contribute as a wide receiver and potentially in the backfield. Greene’s experience and skill set make him a vital addition to the Hokies’ roster, and he has the potential for a strong season if he can stay healthy.
Interestingly, Greene is from Mount Airy High School, which also produced current Hokies RB Tyler Mason and DE Deric Dandy. Located just 90 minutes from Blacksburg, Greene joins as the 17th transfer portal addition and the sixth this week.
Welcome to Virginia Tech, Donavon!
