Breaking: Mets owner jump in to save contract negotiations with star infielder.
The New York Mets have had an impressive offseason. The addition of Juan Soto brings an immediate boost to a team that already reached the National League Championship Series last year. Alongside Soto, they revamped their pitching rotation and signed several low-cost players with spring training invitations.
However, there’s still more work to be done. While acquiring a postseason-tested slugger like Soto is a game-changer, the Mets have allowed Pete Alonso to reach free agency, and contract negotiations to re-sign him remain stalled. Mets fans are increasingly frustrated by the drawn-out talks. President of baseball operations David Stearns appears to be waiting for Alonso and his agent to adjust their expectations regarding a multi-year deal, but the lack of progress is testing the patience of the fanbase.
Pete Alonso has been so outstanding for the Mets since his MLB debut in 2019 that even last year, when he hit 34 home runs with a .788 OPS and a 122 wRC+, people called it a “down season.” With 226 career homers by age 30, Alonso is on a historic trajectory and has consistently proven himself as a powerful and clutch performer, especially in the postseason. Yet, despite his impressive resume, Alonso remains on the free agent market, largely due to the challenges tied to his position.
Mets owner Steve Cohen appears to be losing patience with the situation. According to recent reports, Cohen may need to personally step in to resolve the stalled negotiations. “Steve Cohen may have to ‘jump in’ at some point for Pete Alonso, per @JimDuquetteGM,” New York Post’s Dan Bartels shared on X. When Cohen gets involved, deals typically come together quickly. His leadership in acquiring Juan Soto showcased his determination, as he made it clear that he was willing to significantly outbid the competition to secure the star player.
