BREAING: Jason Jones Confirms return Alabama football ‘Special places to me’
Alabama football officially announced on Friday the hiring of former Crimson Tide player Jason Jones as assistant defensive backs coach. While AL.com reported the move earlier in the week, the official announcement clarified Jones’ title.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer expressed his excitement in a UA news release, praising Jones’ coaching experience and familiarity with Alabama. “I’m excited for the opportunity to add coach Jones to our staff,” DeBoer said. “He has a proven track record of success with defensive backs, and I know he will make a significant impact on that group and our defense as a whole. Adding someone who played and coached here, with invaluable knowledge of this university, is a great benefit.”
Jones, who played defensive back for Alabama and won an SEC championship in 1999, began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Mike Shula. He now returns to his alma mater after his most recent stint at North Carolina.
“The University of Alabama and Tuscaloosa are special places to me,” Jones shared. “My coaching career started here, and coming home to coach at my alma mater is a true blessing. I’m thankful to coach DeBoer for this opportunity and can’t wait to get to work.”
Jones replaces Colin Hitschler on the coaching staff and joins Maurice Linguist in leading Alabama’s defensive backs. His previous coaching stops include Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, and Rice, where he worked alongside Dave Wommack, father of Alabama’s current defensive coordinator Kane Wommack.
