BREAKING: Son of former NFL head coach to join South Carolina’s coaching staff
A source confirmed to The State on Saturday that the South Carolina Gamecocks are bringing Davis Koetter on board in an analyst-type role. Koetter, the son of former Arizona State and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Dirk Koetter, spent the past two seasons on staff with the Texas Longhorns, who made back-to-back appearances in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
In 2023, Koetter served as a graduate assistant, working closely with quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning daily. This past season, he was promoted to an analyst position, primarily focusing on the Longhorns’ tight ends. Although South Carolina has yet to finalize Koetter’s title, his offensive coaching experience suggests he will likely work on that side of the ball.
“Coaching football has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember,” Koetter said during an interview on Boise’s 95.3 FM last week. “Being in it the last two years has confirmed and validated my desire to do it—and that I can be good at it.”
A former high school quarterback at Berkeley Preparatory School in Tampa, Koetter transitioned to wide receiver in college, spending three years at Portland State before transferring to Boise State for two more. During his redshirt senior season, when his father served as Boise State’s offensive coordinator, Koetter recorded 14 receptions for 221 yards and a touchdown.
