The Los Angeles Chargers surpassed expectations in 2024, finishing the regular season with an 11-6 record and earning a playoff berth in Jim Harbaugh’s first year as head coach. One of the team’s key veterans has opted to extend his NFL career for at least one more season after contemplating retirement.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Chargers linebacker Khalil Mack will return for the 2025 season. The nine-time Pro Bowler took time to evaluate his future following the Chargers’ Wild Card loss to the Texans.

Mack is set to become an unrestricted free agent as his contract with Los Angeles expires, leaving the question of where he will play in 2025.

Mack has remained a dominant presence during his time with the Chargers. In 2023, he had a career year, recording 74 total tackles and 17 sacks. While his production dipped in 2024—he managed 39 total tackles and six sacks over 16 games—his recent performances suggest he can still contribute at a high level.

Though entering his age-34 season may raise concerns for some teams, Mack’s experience and ability to make an impact on defense should generate interest in free agency.

Mack has expressed a desire to win a Super Bowl before retiring, making it likely that he’ll seek to join a contending team when free agency begins in March.

How will the Chargers replace Khalil Mack?

It seems unlikely that Khalil Mack will return to the Chargers in 2025, as the pairing appears to be a poor fit for both sides. For Mack, the Chargers’ timeline for competing for a championship may not align with his own, given his limited remaining years in the NFL. Meanwhile, the Chargers are still a few seasons away from being legitimate contenders.

From the team’s perspective, re-signing Mack would present financial challenges. He already accounts for $8.9 million on their 2025 salary cap due to a void year in his previous contract. Bringing him back would not only increase his cap hit but would likely push additional money into future seasons, complicating their financial flexibility.

How Will the Chargers Replace Mack?

The Chargers are likely to invest in their pass rush through the 2025 NFL Draft, which features a deep pool of edge-rushing talent. With a strong group of prospects available, the team should be able to find a capable replacement, even into the later rounds.

Additionally, the Chargers have over $60 million in cap space this offseason, providing them with ample room to explore free-agent options to bolster their pass-rushing unit. By combining a strategic draft pick with a free-agent signing, the Chargers can address Mack’s departure while staying on track with their long-term plans.
