REPORT: Padres Confirms Departure for All Star Closer
The San Diego Padres have indicated a willingness to entertain trade inquiries for their All-Star closer, Robert Suarez. The team has been actively looking to offload several players with expiring contracts this offseason, and Suarez fits within this strategy. While he is set to become a free agent after the 2027 season, his contract includes an opt-out clause after the 2025 season, which could impact the Padres’ plans.
According to Sam Garcia of San Diego Padres on SI, the team might be considering trading Suarez to create more financial flexibility:
“Suarez signed a five-year, $46 million deal with the Padres in November 2022, featuring an opt-out after the 2025 season,” Garcia noted. “While Suarez has been a reliable presence on the mound over his three seasons with San Diego, moving the right-hander could help the Padres strengthen their roster this offseason. With a constrained budget and no major moves in free agency or trades so far, this could be a strategic decision.”
In 2024, Suarez showcased his elite closing ability, finishing with 36 saves (third in the National League), a 9-3 record, and a 2.77 ERA. His blazing 99 mph fastball makes him one of the premier closers in baseball. The remaining $10 million salary for 2025 and $8 million per season for the following two years represent an affordable investment for interested teams.
However, if the Padres choose to keep Suarez, his presence would provide a significant advantage on the mound as they aim for another World Series push next season.
