Basketball season is in full swing, but Danny Sprinkle’s Washington Huskies seem to be having a tough time adjusting to life in the Big Ten. Similarly, Tina Langley’s Huskies have shown flashes of promise and the potential to challenge opponents occasionally, but they’ve been facing their own struggles in conference play.

Fortunately, while this basketball season hasn’t been the most exciting, there are some bright spots and reasons to look forward to better days ahead.

The start of the college baseball and softball seasons is just around the corner, and as a big fan of both sports, I couldn’t be more excited. Here at The Husky Haul, we’ll be diving deep into coverage of both seasons, so it’s time to gear up and start preparing.

Reliving Kelsey Plum’s Washington Huskies jersey retirement

Kelsey Plum stands as one of the greatest athletes in Washington Huskies history, and it was only fitting that the program retired her number. Thankfully, fans can relive that unforgettable moment, as the UW athletics department captured and documented the entire retirement ceremony.

Jedd Fisch, Washington Huskies football team adds new assistant to UW coaching staff

Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies have added a new assistant coach for the 2025 season, bringing Martell Irby to Montlake as the team’s new culture and secondary assistant coach.

Irby previously played under Fisch and much of the current Huskies coaching staff at Arizona during the 2023 season, making this a meaningful reunion. The head coach seems thrilled about the addition, and it’s easy to see why—it’s always exciting to bring familiar faces back into the fold.

Two Washington Huskies headed to the Super Bowl

Trent McDuffie and Keith Taylor, both former Huskies now with the Kansas City Chiefs, are headed to the Super Bowl—no surprise, considering the Chiefs are pretty dominant at this whole football thing. The duo will have a chance to chase a championship when the Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles.

Today’s tunes:

When I write these news-and-notes-style newsletter posts, I like to wrap things up by sharing some music I’ve been into—because, well, why not? It’s been a while since I’ve done a post like this, so let’s kick things off with Comal County Blue by Jason Boland and the Stragglers.

Boland is criminally underrated and deserves way more recognition for his work. I’ll always take the chance to spotlight his best songs when I can. Plus, his live shows are incredible—if you ever get the chance, don’t miss out!
