BREAKING: Reds reunite with former All-Star in blockbuster million Deal
The Cincinnati Reds are aiming to make a postseason push under new manager Terry Francona. After adding Austin Hays to their roster, they’ve reached an agreement with veteran pitcher Wade Miley to join their rotation on a minor league contract, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Miley will earn a pro-rated $2.5 million, with $1 million per inning pitched, and the contract can reach up to $4 million. Miley has the option to opt out on June 1.
The complexity of the contract is due to Miley’s recovery from Tommy John surgery, which is expected to keep him out for Opening Day. However, when he returns, the Reds plan to reward him for every inning he contributes.
Miley made just two appearances in 2024 due to surgery, but in 2023, he went 9-4 with a 3.14 ERA and a 79/38 K/BB ratio over 23 games with the Milwaukee Brewers. Throughout his 14-year MLB career, he holds a 108-99 record, 4.07 ERA, and 1,361/605 K/BB ratio. Miley was an All-Star in 2012 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Heading into the season, the Reds’ rotation will feature Hunter Greene, Brady Singer, and Andrew Abbott, with Singer being a new addition. However, after ranking 18th in ERA (4.09) in 2024, the Reds will need significant improvement from their pitching staff to make a playoff run.
While Miley won’t instantly transform the team into championship contenders, he provides a solid addition for a Reds team seeking pitching stability. Though they’ll have to be patient until he’s fully healthy, the contract suggests they’re willing to wait for Miley to contribute innings when he’s ready.
