Spring Training is just days away for the Chicago Cubs, marking an exciting period for the team and its fans. After a disappointing 2024 season, the Cubs are eager to improve in 2025, and supporters share that hope. While last year was a letdown, the team’s talent remains evident. One key position battle in camp will be at third base, where young prospect Matt Shaw is the frontrunner, though others could compete for the role.

Cubs prospect Matt Shaw is one of the best hitters in MiLB. How it happened

According to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, unless the Cubs sign Alex Bregman, Shaw is expected to be the Opening Day third baseman. A potential Bregman signing could impact Shaw’s role, something Chicago may want to avoid. If the Cubs believe Shaw is ready for the majors, committing over $150 million to an aging third baseman may not be the best move. However, if their priority is winning a World Series and they see Bregman as a key piece, he could be worth the investment.

Shaw has excelled in the minors, posting a .303/.384/.522 slash line over 600 at-bats. At this stage of his development, keeping him in the minors may not be beneficial for anyone.
