BREAKING: Reds continue to fortify bullpen after signing former Royals closer
The Cincinnati Reds have made significant upgrades to their bullpen this offseason. What was once a major concern heading into the 2024-25 offseason could now become one of the team’s biggest strengths by Opening Day.
On Tuesday, the Reds bolstered their relief corps by signing former Royals closer Scott Barlow to a one-year, $2.5 million deal, pending a physical. Barlow, who spent six seasons in Kansas City, was traded to the Padres in 2023 before making 63 appearances for the Cleveland Guardians in 2024.

Barlow began his major league career as a middle reliever before emerging as the Royals’ closer in 2021. That year, he struck out 91 batters over 74 1/3 innings while posting a 2.42 ERA. He followed up with a strong 2022 campaign, recording 24 saves and 77 strikeouts across 69 appearances.

With Barlow in the mix, the Reds’ Opening Day bullpen is nearly set. If healthy, he’ll join Alexis Díaz, Tony Santillan, Brent Suter, Sam Moll, Emilio Pagán, and Taylor Rogers. The final bullpen spot remains open heading into spring training, though many Reds fans expect Buck Farmer to be back in Goodyear soon.

Adding to Cincinnati’s depth, Nick Martinez—who is expected to start the season in the rotation—could transition to a relief role later in the year, further strengthening the bullpen as the season wears on.
The Reds also signed right-hander Josh Staumont to a minor-league deal on Tuesday. The 31-year-old, another former Royal, posted a 3.70 ERA in 25 appearances for the Twins last season. His deal includes an invite to spring training, giving Cincinnati yet another intriguing bullpen option.
