BREAKING: Reds Re-sign former speedster’s following fantastic Winter Ball showcase
Few players in Cincinnati Reds history have endeared themselves to the fanbase quite like Billy Hamilton. The electrifying speedster made his MLB debut at 22, swiping 13 bases in his first 13 games in September 2013.
Hamilton’s blazing speed and highlight-reel defense quickly made him a fan favorite in Cincinnati. However, his struggles at the plate led to a career .631 OPS over six seasons, ultimately prompting the Reds to move on.
After being non-tendered following the 2018 season, Hamilton spent the next five years bouncing between several MLB teams, including the Royals, White Sox, Marlins, Cubs, Braves, Twins, and Mets. Unable to secure a major league deal last season, he instead played in independent leagues.

Last year, Billy Hamilton took his talents to the Mexican League, where he impressed with Charros de Jalisco. In 52 games, he hit .283/.335/.367, stole 35 bases while being caught just three times, and added 10 doubles and three triples to his stat line.

Hamilton shined even more during Winter Ball, posting a .699 OPS with three home runs and 38 stolen bases across 64 games. His performance, particularly in the Caribbean Series, caught the attention of MLB scouts. According to insider Jon Morosi, the 34-year-old is now seeking a minor league contract with a spring training invite.
A return to the Reds would make perfect sense. At his peak, Hamilton was an elite outfield defender, and with Cincinnati’s current outfield depth in question, bringing him back—even on a minor league deal—could provide valuable depth. Even if he spends most of the season in Triple-A, Reds fans would love to see Hamilton’s speed on display in Goodyear this spring. Cincinnati, make it happen!
