Buffalo Bills offensive lineman has announced his medical retirement from the NFL at age 26.

Doyle shared the news on Friday, Feb. 14, citing “nerve damage” in his left leg following a recent injury. “At this point, with the calendar and the healing process, it looks as though it’s permanent,” he said in a statement. “I’m just unable to play football at a high level, and it’s time. When you know, you know.”

Drafted by Buffalo in 2021, Doyle spent four seasons with the team. His latest injury occurred during a preseason game against the Steelers in August 2023, adding to previous setbacks, including a torn ACL in his right leg early in the 2022 season. He had been working toward a comeback when the more severe injury happened.

“I was really battling and competing to return from the ACL injury, only to be hit with something even more devastating,” Doyle said. “At first, there were a lot of negative emotions and anger, but looking back, I’ve learned valuable lessons.”

After reflecting on his journey, Doyle ultimately decided to step away from football and explore new opportunities.

“Football is something I’ve loved and dedicated my life to,” he said. “I put so much time and effort into getting back on the field, but ultimately, that’s not the plan God has for me. I know it’s the right time to move on.”

Though he didn’t reveal his future plans, Doyle expressed deep gratitude for his time in Buffalo and said he would continue to support the team—this time as a fan. “I’d probably like to come to a tailgate and drink some Labatt Blue Lights,” he joked.

Doyle played 11 games as a rookie and left his mark in the Bills’ 47-17 Wild Card win over the Patriots, catching a one-yard touchdown pass from Josh Allen. However, what he cherishes most are the relationships he built.

“The connections with my teammates, coaches, trainers, and fans are what I’ll take away the most,” he said. “Buffalo is an amazing city with an incredible fan base, and the tight-knit locker rooms I was part of were truly special.”
