The Boston Red Sox, fresh off signing former Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman as one of the top free agents this offseason, may not be finished bolstering their roster. Reports suggest they are exploring a trade for one of MLB’s most underrated pitchers, San Diego Padres’ Dylan Cease.
Boston has reportedly been eyeing Cease since December, and discussions between the two teams could be gaining momentum. Cease, along with Michael King, will become a free agent after this season, which makes them potential trade candidates for the Padres before they risk losing them without compensation.
Cease had an impressive 2024 season with the Padres, posting a 3.47 ERA and a 14-11 record in 33 games, with 189.1 innings pitched. He allowed 137 hits, 80 runs, 18 home runs, 65 walks, and tallied 224 strikeouts. His ERA last season was better than five of the six projected starting pitchers for the Red Sox, with only Tanner Houck (3.12) having a more efficient ERA.
