BREAKING: Red Sox Land Massive $154 Million 2-Player Haul In Shocking Trade With Padres To Bolster Rotation
The Boston Red Sox have been heavily linked to a potential blockbuster trade for San Diego Padres ace Dylan Cease. However, the Padres are reportedly seeking a significant return for their star pitcher, which is understandable. The Red Sox, with their deep pool of prospects, are one of the few teams capable of pulling off such a deal. Recently, FanSided’s Cody Williams speculated that the trade could be even bigger than expected, with Cease and Padres closer Robert Suarez heading to Boston in exchange for a substantial package of players. Here’s the proposed trade:
Boston Red Sox receive: RHP Dylan Cease, RHP Robert Suarez
San Diego Padres receive: RHP Kutter Crawford, OF Wilyer Abreu, OF Miguel Bleis (No. 6 prospect), SS Dorian Soto (No. 30 prospect)
Williams points out that this trade could help the Padres continue their competitive rebuild under AJ Preller, with Crawford and Abreu adding value. While Crawford may not match Cease’s talent, his four years of affordable control and reliable rotation potential could be valuable. Meanwhile, Abreu would bolster the outfield with solid defense and a bat that has proven effective against right-handed pitching, with potential for more growth.

Though this offer may be tempting for the Padres, trading both Suarez and their ace would be a significant loss. On the other hand, the Red Sox would greatly strengthen their starting rotation while acquiring one of the best relievers in the game. Suarez’s outstanding 2024 performance suggests he could continue to improve in 2025, and the Red Sox have the financial flexibility to re-sign Cease, with an estimated deal worth $108 million well within their budget.
Red Sox Show Interest in Padres Pitcher to Bolster Rotation for 2025
The Boston Red Sox, fresh off signing former Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman as one of the top free agents this offseason, may not be finished bolstering their roster. Reports suggest they are exploring a trade for one of MLB’s most underrated pitchers, San Diego Padres’ Dylan Cease.

Boston has reportedly been eyeing Cease since December, and discussions between the two teams could be gaining momentum. Cease, along with Michael King, will become a free agent after this season, which makes them potential trade candidates for the Padres before they risk losing them without compensation.
Cease had an impressive 2024 season with the Padres, posting a 3.47 ERA and a 14-11 record in 33 games, with 189.1 innings pitched. He allowed 137 hits, 80 runs, 18 home runs, 65 walks, and tallied 224 strikeouts. His ERA last season was better than five of the six projected starting pitchers for the Red Sox, with only Tanner Houck (3.12) having a more efficient ERA. If the Red Sox acquire Cease, he would likely slot as one of their top two pitchers and could be in line for a contract extension. Despite being a two-time All-MLB Second-Team selection, Cease has yet to make an All-Star team.
