Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is optimistic about securing a lucrative contract extension.

Now eligible for a new deal for the first time in his career, the 25-year-old doesn’t appear inclined to offer the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft any sort of hometown discount.

At 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, Cook has become a key piece of Buffalo’s offense alongside MVP quarterback Josh Allen. He is coming off a standout 2024 season, where he rushed for 1,009 yards and a career-high 12 touchdowns, positioning himself for a significant payday.

“Gonna Stand on What I Stand On” James Cook’s Message to Buffalo Bills

This marks the first time in his NFL career that the former University of Georgia star has a chance to secure a lucrative contract, and he doesn’t seem willing to let the opportunity slip away.

“I’m standing firm on what I believe,” Cook recently stated. “I don’t want to be seen as a distraction because that’s not who I am. Honestly, I just want to handle my business and get what I deserve.”

Cook has already made it clear this offseason that he’s seeking $15 million per year in his next contract.

If he manages to secure that salary from the Bills, he would become the league’s second-highest-paid running back, behind only Christian McCaffrey, who earns an average of $19 million per season.

Over his first three seasons, Cook has amassed 2,638 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns. While the Bills would likely prefer to keep him, they may see greater value in allocating those funds elsewhere, particularly as they continue building around Josh Allen and considering the depth of talent available in this year’s running back draft class.

How Cook approaches the final season of his rookie contract—if the Bills opt not to extend him this offseason—remains to be seen.
