The St. Louis Cardinals may not be finished making moves.

Despite expectations, the Cardinals had a relatively quiet offseason, aiming to “reset” their roster. However, the team will look much the same in 2025 as it did in 2024, indicating the offseason didn’t go as planned.

Could a trade still be on the horizon? ESPN insiders discussed which teams might make a major move this spring, and Jesse Rogers identified the Cardinals as a top candidate.

St Louis Cardinals news, rumors and free agency updates from Redbird Rants

“Some might assume San Diego fits this category, but after acquiring Nick Pivetta, the Padres seem focused on contending this year,” Rogers said. “My top pick for a spring trade is St. Louis. It could involve Nolan Arenado, closer Ryan Helsley, or starter Sonny Gray. The Cardinals have multiple options as they try to maximize their roster’s talent—possibly sooner rather than later, or even in July.”

While St. Louis has several appealing trade assets, no-trade clauses have complicated potential deals. With Spring Training underway, a trade involving Arenado would be surprising at this stage, but other players linked to trade rumors remain in play. Keep an eye on the Cardinals.
