The Houston Astros’ infield is set for a major shakeup next season. Jose Altuve has been practicing in left field, while the team bolstered its roster by signing Christian Walker and acquiring Isaac Paredes in the Kyle Tucker trade. With Alex Bregman’s departure long expected, the Astros had previously attempted to trade for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, but he declined the move. However, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Brian McTaggart, and John Denton, Houston has renewed its interest in Arenado, and he may now be open to waiving his no-trade clause.

When the Astros first pursued Arenado in December, the Cardinals were reportedly willing to cover $15-20 million of his contract. Now, with Walker in place at first base, Houston is looking to finalize a deal that would reinforce their infield. Acquiring Arenado would allow Altuve to transition to left field while Paredes and Jeremy Peña handle the middle infield, and Walker and Arenado take over the corners.

Arenado, who originally signed an eight-year, $260 million contract with the Colorado Rockies in 2019 before being traded to St. Louis, is owed $74 million over the next three seasons. A decorated player, he boasts eight All-Star selections, five Silver Slugger awards, 10 Gold Gloves, and six Platinum Gloves. Adding him would seamlessly replace Bregman and help keep the Astros competitive at a high level.
