Just a few weeks into spring training, newly acquired ace Garrett Crochet is already expressing interest in a contract extension with the Boston Red Sox. During an appearance on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show, Red Sox CBO Craig Breslow was asked about the possibility of extending the left-hander. While no formal discussions have taken place, Breslow acknowledged mutual interest, particularly from Crochet.

“Garrett (Crochet) has been vocal about at least exploring the possibility of a long-term commitment, and I share that interest,” Breslow stated.

Despite joining the team only months ago, Crochet has quickly become the Red Sox’s ace moving forward. The team would be wise to secure him with a long-term deal now, as the 25-year-old isn’t set to reach free agency until after the 2026 season. Locking him in early could allow Boston to negotiate a more favorable contract. The Red Sox haven’t had a pitcher of his caliber in some time—the last being Chris Sale, who was also acquired from the White Sox. However, Crochet has the potential to ascend to the elite tier of MLB starters.

After missing the 2022 season and most of 2023 due to injuries, Crochet bounced back with an impressive All-Star campaign in 2024. Over 32 starts, he posted a 3.58 ERA, 115 ERA+, 2.69 FIP, and an incredible 12.9 strikeouts per nine innings across 146 innings pitched. With his talent evident, a long-term deal would be a smart move for both Crochet and the Red Sox.
