REPORT: Red Sox Star Rafael Devers Makes Six-Word Declaration After Latest Signing

Rafael Devers isn’t concerned about public opinion regarding his firm stance on staying at third base. Earlier this week, the Boston Red Sox star made it clear that he has no plans to relinquish the position to new teammate Alex Bregman and harbors no resentment toward the team. Devers recently stated he won’t transition to a full-time designated hitter role following Bregman’s signing. While Boston has yet to clarify whether Bregman will play third or second, Devers’ refusal to switch positions has drawn criticism from fans and analysts.

However, Devers remains unfazed. “I don’t listen to what’s said,” he told MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “I just know what I’m capable of. I’m happy being this way.” Position changes aren’t uncommon in baseball, as seen with Aaron Judge shifting to center field last season to accommodate Juan Soto and now expected to return to right field with Cody Bellinger taking over in center for the Yankees.

Despite speculation, Devers insists he has no issues with manager Alex Cora or chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, though he acknowledged he hasn’t recently discussed his role with them. Aside from brief emergency appearances at second base and shortstop, Devers has primarily played third base or taken designated hitter reps in the majors. Confident in his abilities, he reaffirmed, “I know what I can do on both the offensive side of the ball and also on defense.”
