BREAKING: Alex Cora Reveals Bad Injury News for Red Sox Star
The Boston Red Sox are heading into a crucial season, having invested significant time, money, and resources to turn their fortunes around. However, they’re facing some early challenges with star outfielder and Gold Glove winner Wilyer Abreu. Manager Alex Cora acknowledged that Abreu’s availability for the regular season opener against the Texas Rangers on March 27 remains uncertain. Speaking with NESN’s Alex Speier and other media members, Cora noted Abreu’s physical setbacks: “You can tell he’s not as strong as he was three weeks ago. It’s not just about baseball—he missed a lot of strength and conditioning work. Now, we have to ramp up, so we’ll see. The most important thing is for him to be healthy.”

Abreu has been sidelined throughout Spring Training due to a gastrointestinal infection, preventing him from practicing until he gets medical clearance. While the Red Sox boast a deep infield, their outfield options are more limited, making Abreu’s absence a concern. He is one of the team’s top defensive players, and the prolonged nature of his illness raises questions about his readiness.

While Spring Training isn’t essential for star players to play every game, it helps them prepare for the season.
Last year marked Abreu’s breakout season, as he played 132 games and recorded 101 hits, 59 runs, 33 doubles, 15 home runs, 58 RBIs, eight stolen bases, and 40 walks while striking out 125 times. He finished with a .253 batting average, a .322 on-base percentage, and a .459 slugging percentage. Defensively, he registered 222 putouts and nine assists. The Red Sox will continue monitoring his condition throughout the remainder of Spring Training to determine if he’ll be ready for Opening Day.
