BREAKING: Broncos Star Pass Rusher Expected to Receive Major Contract Extension
As free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft approach, the Denver Broncos are becoming an increasing threat to the Kansas City Chiefs. However, there are a few key issues the Broncos need to address first, one of which is the potential extension of their rising pass-rusher, Nik Bonitto. Entering the final year of his four-year, $5.8 million contract, Bonitto had an impressive second season in 2023. Although he began as a backup, he quickly emerged as a starter and a standout player. In 17 games (15 starts), Bonitto recorded 48 total tackles, 33 solo tackles, 24 quarterback hits, 16 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, four pass deflections, and one interception.

Along with outside linebacker Jonathan Cooper, Bonitto helped propel the Broncos defense, which ranked third in the NFL in points allowed per game (18.3). Bonitto is expected to push for one of the highest salaries on the team. According to DNVR reporter Zac Stevens, league sources suggest that extension talks for Bonitto will start at $23 million per season. If he lands that amount, he would become the second-highest-paid player on the Broncos.
Currently, the highest-paid defensive player is cornerback Pat Surtain II, who earns $24 million annually. Any salary surpassing Surtain’s would likely depend on Bonitto’s ability to remain explosive and consistent throughout his career. While the salary cap is rising, the Broncos may hesitate to offer Bonitto such a lucrative deal based on just one breakout season. Nevertheless, Bonitto’s performance makes him deserving of one of the top contracts on the team.
