Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu has faced a difficult offseason due to a gastrointestinal illness that has impacted his spring training. He was unable to participate in any team workouts or practices until this week, though he had been training on his own beforehand. On Monday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora discussed Abreu’s progress with MLB.com’s Ian Browne, noting that the outfielder has started swinging again—up to 40 swings—and played catch that day. These signs indicate improvement in Abreu’s health as he slowly works his way back into team activities. The next step in his recovery involves consistently participating in drills, including batting practice and running, but that will only happen once he is fully cleared.

Cora expressed uncertainty about Abreu’s readiness for Opening Day, stating that while the team can help him regain at-bats through Minor League work and simulated pitching, he has lost some muscle mass and needs time to rebuild his strength.

With less than three weeks until the regular season begins, Abreu still has an opportunity to get back into form, though concerns remain about the weight he has lost due to the illness. The Red Sox will start their 2025 campaign with a four-game road series against the Texas Rangers. Abreu, entering his third MLB season, aims to build on his Gold Glove-winning performance from last year, but his early-season outlook remains uncertain as he works toward a full recovery.
