With Opening Day for the Cincinnati Reds just three weeks away, the team entered the morning of March 5 with 61 players still in big league camp. By noon, however, that number had dropped as the Reds made their first round of roster cuts.

Six players were reassigned to minor league camp, including top prospects Edwin Arroyo and Cam Collier. As reported by The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosecrans, they were joined by Hector Rodriguez, Jose Acuña, Michael Trautwein, and Ivan Johnson. While all possess significant talent and potential, their reassignment isn’t surprising, as they are not currently part of the Reds’ major league plans and there isn’t enough time left in camp for them to compete for a roster spot.

One unexpected development, however, was the decision to keep 21-year-old Sal Stewart in big league camp. Stewart was on a similar path as Arroyo and Collier last season before a wrist injury sidelined him in the second half.

He’s likely to start the 2025 season with Double-A Chattanooga, but he has impressed in camp with his strong plate discipline (3 walks, 3 strikeouts) and a home run. His extended stay could be an opportunity for the Reds to evaluate his defensive versatility across the infield.

Following these cuts, 55 players remain in big league camp.
