The Cincinnati Reds made their first round of spring training roster cuts on Wednesday, a routine move at this stage of the preseason. With the coaching staff focused on assembling the Opening Day roster, they’ve decided to reassign players who are expected to start the season in the minors.

Before their Cactus League matchup against the Texas Rangers, the Reds sent Jose Acuña, Edwin Arroyo, Cam Collier, Ivan Johnson, Hector Rodriguez, and Michael Trautwein to minor-league camp.

Since all six players were non-roster invitees, these cuts were anticipated. However, one notable name was left off the list, potentially hinting that Cincinnati has significant plans for one of their top prospects in the near future.

Reds’ first round of spring training roster cuts did not include Sal Stewart

Sal Stewart’s name was notably absent from the list of players reassigned to minor-league camp. The Reds’ top infield prospect has impressed throughout spring training in Goodyear, suggesting the organization sees him as a potential contributor to the big league roster later this season.

Cincinnati Reds' Prospect Sal Stewart Making Noise This Spring

Each year, a prospect makes waves during spring training, and this time, it’s Stewart. The former first-round pick has played in eight Cactus League games, posting a .231/.375/.539 slash line with a double and a home run. However, his plate discipline has been even more impressive, drawing three walks while striking out just three times.

While Stewart could still be reassigned following Wednesday’s game against the Rangers, Cincinnati’s thin depth at third base could keep him in major league camp a bit longer. He started at third in Wednesday’s game, giving him another opportunity to showcase his skills.

Though making the Opening Day roster remains unlikely, facing big league pitching in camp will only boost Stewart’s chances of earning a call-up later in the year. After finishing last season at High-A Dayton, he’s expected to begin 2025 at Double-A Chattanooga.
