The New York Rangers have traded forward Rielly Smith to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Brendan Brisson and a 2025 third-round pick. Smith, a pending unrestricted free agent, had been held out of recent games to avoid injury risk before the Rangers finalized the move. While it’s uncertain what the draft pick will yield, Vegas reunites with one of its original “Misfits,” while New York gains a young asset.

This season, Smith has recorded 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points in 58 games, averaging exactly half a point per game. A solid middle-six forward and reliable penalty killer, he contributed offensively but was ultimately deemed expendable as the Rangers continue their youth movement. The Mimico, Ontario native now moves on as New York reshapes its roster.

Brendan Brisson, a Los Angeles native, has yet to establish himself at the NHL level, tallying two goals and six assists for eight points in 24 career games. However, none of those points have come in his nine appearances this season. At 23, he still has room to develop, and the Rangers clearly see potential in him.

Standing at 6’0″, Brisson doesn’t fit the “meat and potatoes” mold often associated with the Rangers’ trade targets this deadline, but he offers offensive upside. His inclusion in the deal may also help Vegas free up a contract slot for Smith. With the trade deadline fast approaching, more moves are expected across the league, including from the Rangers. As part of the deal, New York will retain 50% of Smith’s remaining cap hit.
