Von Miller, once a marquee acquisition for a Super Bowl push, is now a cap casualty as the Buffalo Bills look to balance their financial situation while remaining competitive in the AFC.

The Bills are releasing Miller, freeing up $8.4 million in salary cap space, according to NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. However, both parties are reportedly open to a potential reunion.

Set to earn a $17.1 million base salary in 2025, Miller accounted for 8.5% of Buffalo’s cap. The team was $8.6 million over the limit before deciding to move on from the 35-year-old pass rusher.

A two-time Super Bowl champion with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams, Miller joined Buffalo in 2022 on a six-year, $120 million deal, expected to be a key piece in the team’s championship aspirations. However, injuries, off-field issues, and his declining performance made the investment less impactful than hoped.

Over three seasons with the Bills, Miller appeared in 36 of a possible 50 games, starting 11—all in his first season. He recorded 14 sacks, 41 tackles, 23 quarterback hits, and one forced fumble. His tenure included an ACL tear in 2022 and a four-game suspension in 2023 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy after turning himself in on felony assault accusations, though no charges were filed.

Last offseason, the Bills made several notable cuts, including Tre’Davious White and Jordan Poyer, but Miller remained after restructuring his contract. In 2024, he managed six sacks in 13 games but had minimal impact in the playoffs, registering just one tackle in three games.

Approaching his 36th birthday on March 26, Miller’s future remains uncertain. A likely future Hall of Famer, he still seeks to contribute, though his market value is unclear.

Miller enters a free-agent pool lacking star power, and a possible return to Denver is likely to be discussed. However, the Broncos already have young talents Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper at outside linebacker, along with John Franklin-Myers and Zach Allen on the defensive line.

Contending teams in need of pass-rushing help, such as the Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, could be potential fits. The Atlanta Falcons may also have interest, as head coach Raheem Morris previously coached Miller as the Rams’ defensive coordinator during their Super Bowl run.

Currently the NFL’s active career sack leader, Miller leaves Buffalo with 129.5 career sacks. He is just half a sack away from joining an exclusive group of 16 players with 130 or more sacks and will look for a new team to continue making history.
