Cam Collier, a 20-year-old infield prospect for the Cincinnati Reds, is set to undergo surgery on his injured left thumb this week, as announced by Reds manager Terry Francona and team officials on Sunday.

The procedure, aimed at repairing a torn UCL in his left hand (his glove hand), could keep Collier out of action for up to four to six weeks before he can resume hitting. The injury occurred during a March 2 game against the Chicago Cubs. The surgery is scheduled for Thursday, according to Francona.

Francona reassured Collier, saying, “It’s not like it’s a lost year. I told him it’s a hiccup. For a kid that age, hopefully while he’s down he can just (work on) his legs and turn something that could be perceived as a negative into a positive.” Collier, a consensus top 100 prospect, was one of the first players reassigned to minor league camp earlier this week after appearing in eight Cactus League games, where he batted .125.
