BREAKING: Commanders adding veteran corner after 9-year Patriots stint
The Washington Commanders have strengthened their secondary with an experienced addition.
Veteran cornerback Jonathan Jones is joining the Commanders on a one-year contract after spending nine seasons with the New England Patriots.
Per Jeremy Fowler:
“Source: Veteran cornerback Jonathan Jones to the Commanders on a one-year deal. After nine years and 11 interceptions in New England, Jones heads to NFC East.”
This is a smart move for the reigning NFC Championship finalists, who made an unexpected playoff run behind quarterback Jayden Daniels. Washington’s defense was inconsistent at times, making Jones a valuable addition.

The 31-year-old, who went undrafted in 2016, won two Super Bowls with the Patriots and initially signed a three-year deal worth just over $1 million. Though he saw playing time throughout his tenure, he didn’t become a full-time starter until 2022.

Last season, the former Auburn standout recorded 58 tackles across 17 games, including 14 starts. Over his Patriots career, he played in 132 games, starting 71, and took on multiple roles in the secondary.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Commanders are among the NFC favorites. Despite an impressive postseason run, they were overmatched by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC title game. However, the future looks bright with Daniels leading the offense.
Washington has been active in free agency, re-signing key players like Zach Ertz, Bobby Wagner, and Marcus Mariota while also adding Javon Kinlaw, Will Harris, and now Jonathan Jones. Strengthening the defense has been a priority.
Jones will have the opportunity to return to the postseason after the Patriots’ struggles in the post-Tom Brady era. His veteran presence could be a key factor for Washington’s defense in 2025.
