“Reds Lock Up Future Behind the Plate: Catcher Agrees to 3-Year Contract Extension”
The Cincinnati Reds have reached an agreement with catcher Jose Trevino on a three-year contract extension that runs through the 2027 season, as announced Thursday.
The $15 million deal, which also includes a club option for 2028, adds $11.5 million in guaranteed money, according to sources confirmed by ESPN.
Trevino will serve as the Reds’ primary catcher to start the season, with Tyler Stephenson sidelined due to an oblique injury. Stephenson, who last played on March 11, was scratched the following day and underwent an MRI on March 13.

Trevino, who was set to hit free agency at the end of the season, hit eight home runs and drove in 28 RBIs in 73 games for the New York Yankees last year. He was traded to the Reds in December in exchange for right-hander Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson.

In his seven-season major league career, the 32-year-old Trevino has posted a .236 batting average, a .637 OPS, 32 home runs, and 141 RBIs in 399 games with the Texas Rangers (2018-21) and the Yankees.
Trevino, an All-Star and Gold Glove Award winner in 2022, went 1-for-5 with a walk in four postseason games last fall.
