The Buffalo Bills’ offense was so dominant in 2024 that Josh Allen earned the league MVP award. However, the defense had its share of struggles, which may push the team to prioritize defensive improvements this offseason.

A recent mock draft projects the Bills using their first four picks in the 2025 NFL Draft to strengthen their defense, aiming to help Buffalo reach its first Super Bowl in over three decades.

Bills Select Kenneth Grant at No. 30 Overall

Ben Rolfe of Pro Football Network emphasized that the Bills should focus their early-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft on defense in his latest mock draft.

Rolfe noted, “The Buffalo Bills addressed their edge-rusher needs by adding Joey Bosa and Michael Hoecht, but defensive tackle remains a priority. Kenneth Grant, an explosive prospect from Michigan, combines speed, size, and power to disrupt opposing offenses. While he may not always show up on the stat sheet, Grant’s ability to occupy blockers will allow other defenders to thrive. His floor is a dominant run defender, with a high upside as a pass rusher.”

Grant could serve as a key anchor in the middle of Buffalo’s defensive line, pairing well with Ed Oliver in a rotational role.

Bills Start NFL Draft with Four Straight Defensive Selections

Rolfe didn’t stop at just one defensive addition, securing another top talent from the NFL Combine by selecting cornerback Maxwell Hairston at No. 56 overall.

Discussing the pick, Rolfe explained, “The Bills’ secondary depth was exposed by the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. While Dane Jackson returns alongside Christian Benford and Taron Johnson, depth remains a concern. Maxwell Hairston showcased elite speed at the Combine, which is evident on tape along with his playmaking ability. He has the potential to compete for a starting role right away or serve as a high-level backup in 2025.”

Despite selecting Grant in the first round, Rolfe continued to bolster the defensive line by picking Ohio State EDGE JT Tuimoloau at No. 62 overall.

On the decision, Rolfe stated, “The defensive rebuild continues with a pass rusher for Buffalo. JT Tuimoloau has the tools and explosiveness to develop into a high-impact player, but he hasn’t fully unlocked his potential at the college level. There’s still work to be done for him to reach his ceiling.”

He added, “Buffalo might choose a different direction on draft day since they already have several players with Tuimoloau’s skill set—versatile but not elite in one particular area. The Bills may instead prioritize a pure pass rusher capable of consistently disrupting opposing quarterbacks, even if it means sacrificing some run defense.”

A draft strategy focused heavily on defense would indicate Buffalo’s confidence in its offensive playmakers surrounding Josh Allen. With players like James Cook, Khalil Shakir, and Dalton Kincaid continuing to play key roles, the Bills would be making a strong commitment to reinforcing their defense.
