REPORT: Bills’ Under The Radar Signing Seen As James Cook Insurance
The Buffalo Bills have secured contracts for several key players this offseason, including Greg Rousseau, Khalil Shakir, Josh Allen, and Terrel Bernard. However, one notable exception is James Cook. As he enters the final year of his rookie deal, Cook is aiming to become one of the highest-paid running backs, leaving his future with the team uncertain.
Meanwhile, the Bills quietly re-signed running back Ty Johnson, who proved to be a valuable asset under offensive coordinator Joe Brady. According to ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg, Johnson’s return may have been influenced by Cook’s contract situation. She notes that keeping Johnson on a two-year deal provides stability for the offense and ensures depth at the position beyond 2026. Johnson played a complementary role alongside Cook and rookie Ray Davis, solidifying himself as the team’s primary third-down back.

With Cook yet to sign a new deal, it remains unclear whether he will hold out, though he has expressed a desire to avoid being a disruptive presence in the locker room. In the meantime, the Bills seem to have a contingency plan in place with Johnson.

Whether the team can reach an agreement with Cook remains to be seen, as general manager Brandon Beane faces salary cap challenges and will need to navigate the financial landscape carefully.
