BREAKING: Alex Bregman makes feelings clear on Rafael Devers after Boston Red Sox refusal
Alex Bregman has reaffirmed his admiration for Boston Red Sox teammate Rafael Devers after taking over third base following his high-profile free agency signing.
Bregman joined the Red Sox on a three-year, $120 million contract. His arrival initially sparked a strong reaction from Devers, who firmly stated that third base was his position. However, Red Sox manager Alex Cora later clarified that Devers would primarily serve as the team’s designated hitter and was unlikely to play third.

Devers soon softened his stance, expressing his willingness to prioritize the team’s success heading into the 2025 season. The Red Sox open their campaign Thursday night against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.
Ahead of the season, Bregman praised Devers as one of baseball’s best players and reiterated his admiration for his new teammate. “It’s been great,” Bregman told NESN. “I’ve always admired him. I think he’s one of the best players in baseball, and I loved competing against him. I’m really excited to be on the same team, working together toward our goal—winning games and bringing postseason baseball back to Boston.”
Cora confirmed that Devers had openly shared his feelings during Spring Training discussions but ultimately accepted the team’s decision. “We had conversations throughout Spring Training, and [Devers] was very vocal about his thoughts. We made the decision—Alex is playing third, and Raffy is going to DH. We’re all in the business of winning, and he understands that.”
Cora added: “Like anything, you don’t have to agree with it, but this is what we’re doing to maximize performance. He’s been working hard, both with his swing and his routine. He’s ready to go. He’ll be hitting second, regardless of the pitcher, and he’ll be our DH.”

Bregman also praised Boston’s top prospects—Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer, and Roman Anthony—after seeing them in Spring Training. “They’ve been fantastic since day one,” he said. “They’ve played really well here.”
“Watching them every day, they’re all incredible talents,” Bregman continued. “All three will contribute at some point this season, and hopefully, that means helping us win a lot of games.”
