BREAKING: Mariners add another pitching depth with former All-Star
Four days after being released by the Seattle Mariners, All-Star relief pitcher Drew Pomeranz has been re-signed to a minor league contract, according to baseball columnist Jon Heyman.
This news comes just as the Mariners begin their season against the Athletics on Thursday.
During the offseason, Pomeranz and the Mariners agreed to a minor league contract, but he asked for his release after failing to make the Opening Day roster. Pomeranz, who has been in the league since 2011 and was an All-Star in 2016, hasn’t pitched in a major league game since 2021 due to a series of injuries.
However, he showed promise in spring training, striking out 10 batters in 7 2/3 innings in the Cactus League.

Pomeranz has previously played for the Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers, and Los Angeles Angels. In 2024, he signed a minor league deal with the Angels, hoping to contribute to their bullpen. Injuries, however, have hindered his career, leaving him struggling to stay in the league.
What Drew Pomeranz can bring to Mariners
Pomeranz brings significant health risks, particularly at 36 years old. However, with over a decade of experience, he could offer the Mariners valuable relief depth to complement their two other left-handed relievers, Tayler Saucedo and Gabe Speier, in case of injuries.

Of course, this depends on his ability to stay healthy. If Pomeranz can remain in top form, he’s demonstrated the ability to log solid innings, throwing a four-seam fastball in the 90-94 mph range and a knuckle curveball up to 82 mph.
Pomeranz holds a career record of 48-58 with a 3.91 ERA.
He is expected to report to Triple-A Tacoma, where the season starts on Friday. If he performs well there, Pomeranz could earn a promotion to Seattle and possibly make his first major league appearance in four years.
