BREAKING: Francisco Lindor Sends Message With Mets Facing Major Decision
Before the season, there was speculation about whether New York would name a team captain for the first time since David Wright’s retirement in 2018. While Francisco Lindor was a strong candidate, the Mets had a difficult choice to make due to their unique leadership structure and the addition of a new star player. As Anthony DiComo of MLB.com noted earlier this month, “The current situation is different, with two established leaders in Lindor and Nimmo, a marquee newcomer in Soto, and several respected veterans.”
Ultimately, the Mets chose not to appoint a captain before the season but left the possibility open for the future. In a recent interview with GQ, Lindor shared his thoughts on the prospect. “I would love it,” he said.
Earlier this spring, Mets officials broadly discussed the idea of naming a captain.

“I would accept it. I think it would be—no, I know it’s an honor. It would definitely mean something to me.” Considering Wright’s legacy in New York, naming a new captain would be a significant decision, one the Mets may need to address as Lindor continues to solidify his leadership role.
