After weeks of evaluating Aaron Rodgers as a potential option, the Minnesota Vikings have officially committed to J.J. McCarthy.

During the NFL Owners Meetings this week, O’Connell addressed the situation directly.

Vikings Coach Kevin O’Connell Addresses Aaron Rodgers Rumors

Speaking with the media in Palm Beach, Florida, Kevin O’Connell clarified that while Aaron Rodgers reached out to him, it doesn’t signal any doubts about J.J. McCarthy.

O’Connell, as quoted by The Athletic’s Alec Lewis, emphasized that both realities can coexist:

The Vikings drafted McCarthy 10th overall after a thorough evaluation, and though an injury cut his rookie year short, the team maximized his development while preparing Sam Darnold and other quarterbacks. O’Connell expressed confidence in McCarthy’s progress and readiness for the upcoming season.

At the same time, O’Connell acknowledged Rodgers’ decorated career as a four-time MVP and the respect he commands. With Rodgers at a career crossroads, he initiated discussions about his future, and Minnesota was one of the teams involved. O’Connell noted his long-standing relationship with Rodgers but reiterated that his focus remains on McCarthy’s development.

Ultimately, O’Connell expressed strong belief in McCarthy’s potential, stressing that while projections are positive, the real work begins now, as talk in the offseason means little without execution on the field.

Notably, O’Connell also emphasized that McCarthy was kept informed about the conversations with Rodgers—just as he is with all free-agent decisions.

“I do see him every day throughout the week, and I thought it was important that he was hearing it from me,” O’Connell said, per The Athletic’s Alec Lewis.
