Report: Notre Dame Fighting Irish Make Immediate Decision on Nico Iamaleava
Following Nico Iamaleava’s unexpected and abrupt departure from Tennessee, Notre Dame has reportedly made a swift decision regarding their stance on the highly touted quarterback. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Tennessee chose to part ways with Iamaleava just a day after he missed a team practice amid a conflict over his NIL agreement.

Head coach Josh Heupel informed the team of the decision on Saturday morning, just ahead of the Volunteers’ spring game. The report noted that Heupel and the coaching staff had unsuccessfully attempted to contact Iamaleava and his representatives after Friday’s absence. Iamaleava later informed offensive coordinator Joey Halzle of his intention to enter the transfer portal, with Tennessee confirming he would not be welcomed back.

Meanwhile, Iamaleava’s options appear to be narrowing. College football insider John Brice reported that Notre Dame has no plans to pursue the former Tennessee signal-caller, despite his role in guiding the Vols to the College Football Playoff.
“IMPORTANT TO NOTE HERE: Am told EMPHATICALLY that neither Notre Dame nor USC has any interest whatsoever in Nico,” Brice posted on X. Notre Dame’s quarterback depth chart is already packed, featuring four scholarship players — freshman Blake Hebert, redshirt freshman CJ Carr, redshirt sophomore Kenny Minchey, and redshirt junior Steve Angeli — all of whom are in the mix for the starting role this offseason.
