HUGE BLOW: Michigan State appears to be lose another two more wide receivers via transfer portal
Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith’s first recruiting class is seeing more turnover, as two freshman wide receivers, Jaylan Brown and Austin Clay, have entered the transfer portal, a team spokesperson confirmed.
Both players were part of the 2024 recruiting class Smith put together after taking over the program in November 2023. Neither saw playing time last season. Brown, a 6-foot-1, 192-pound receiver from Nacogdoches, Texas, was rated the No. 155 wideout in the 247Sports Composite rankings. Clay, from Cleveland, stands 6-foot and 170 pounds, and was ranked No. 175 in the same class.

They are now the second and third players from MSU’s 21-member 2024 class to hit the portal. Defensive back Jaylen Thompson, a three-star recruit from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, transferred to Memphis after the season.
The Spartans have seen significant turnover at wide receiver, losing four players to the portal post-season: Jaron Glover (Mississippi State), Jaelen Smith (UTSA), Aziah Johnson (North Carolina), and Antonio Gates Jr. (Delaware State). In response, Smith added four transfer wideouts this spring: Chrishon McCray (Kent State), Omari Kelly (Middle Tennessee State), Evan Boyd (Central Michigan), and Rodney Bullard Jr. (Valdosta State).
