An unexpected commitment brings another guard to the UNC basketball program’s roster.
Nobody saw this commitment coming!
The UNC basketball program boosted guard depth after getting a commitment from Virginia Tech transfer Jaydon Young.
Young had committed to High Point this offseason, but coaching changes prompted the former Virginia Tech Hokie to reconsider his options. This led him to Chapel Hill, where the 6-foot-4 guard returned to his home state to pursue his college basketball career.
I give him (and North Carolina) credit: no one had any idea this was even being considered!
Young spent the first two seasons of his undergraduate career at Virginia Tech. Young’s role grew this season, and so did his output, averaging 8.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in more than 22 minutes per game.
Young delivered several standout efforts down the stretch, scoring in double digits in each of his final six games of the 2024-2025 season. He scored 27 points in a win over Miami, then 26 points in an overtime triumph against Syracuse two games later.
While he will most likely be a rotational player, Young is a player who can add spark to any job he is assigned. His shooting percentages aren’t particularly high (which could be due to taking a huge amount of shots), but considering that his attempts will be far lower once he comes in Chapel Hill, the hope is that he’ll be able to be more productive with more room and opportunities.
This was an unexpected pledge, but it makes a lot of sense for the UNC basketball team, as Jaydon Young adds much-needed depth at the guard position. He becomes the latest piece to this puzzle, a group that will look a lot different than the team we saw during the 2024-2025 season.
