The New York Rangers are reportedly closing in on hiring former Penguins coach Mike Sullivan as their next head coach. According to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan and Kevin Weekes, the Rangers are in advanced talks with Sullivan and are expected to offer him one of the most lucrative coaching deals in NHL history—potentially exceeding \$7 million annually, following his previous \$5.5 million salary in Pittsburgh.
While the Rangers haven’t officially confirmed the hiring, all signs point to Sullivan becoming the 38th head coach in franchise history. Known for leading the Penguins to two Stanley Cups during his nearly decade-long tenure, Sullivan was one of the top coaching options available. His availability was unexpected, making him a high-priority target for the Rangers, who acted quickly to pursue him. As Elliotte Friedman put it, the Rangers were determined not to let anyone outbid them in securing Sullivan.

Earlier Thursday, Pierre LeBrun reported that the Anaheim Ducks had also shown interest in Sullivan. Kaplan added that John Tortorella is a strong candidate to rejoin the Rangers in some capacity, while David Quinn—though not expected to follow Sullivan—remains in the mix for other head coaching jobs, including a possible return to Pittsburgh.
