The San Francisco 49ers have not yet extended Brock Purdy’s contract, raising concerns with training camp approaching. Within the organization, there’s a clear desire and expectation to finalize a new deal for Purdy in the near future.

As for what Purdy might be seeking, some reports suggest he could be aiming for a contract exceeding \$230 million—an eye-popping figure for a quarterback whose abilities have been questioned at times.

General manager John Lynch addressed the media about the situation, reiterating the team’s policy of keeping negotiations private. However, he noted that discussions have been productive so far, and while there’s no exact timeline for a deal, progress is being made.

“We’ve always chosen not to discuss contract talks publicly,” Lynch said, via 49ers Web Zone. “That’s how I handled things when I played, and I’ve carried that approach into my role now. What I can say is the conversations have been very positive. We don’t know exactly when it will get done, but we’re working on it and moving in the right direction.”

Do 49ers Want to Pay $250M for Brock Purdy?

The San Francisco 49ers may not see Brock Purdy as a \$250 million quarterback, but the challenge is that if they let him hit free agency, another team likely will. Holding off on a new deal could end up costing the 49ers more in the long run, as quarterback prices across the league continue to rise. Even without an MVP or Super Bowl win, Purdy is still in the same market where many top-paid QBs lack those accolades as well.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay projected Purdy’s next contract at six years, \$324 million—a steep price for a quarterback often seen as slightly above average.

“While Purdy hasn’t won MVP like Josh Allen, he’s been part of that conversation and took the 49ers to a Super Bowl in just his second year,” Kay wrote. “Given that aging and injury-prone quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins were signing \$45 million-per-year deals as recently as last year, it’s reasonable to place Purdy’s value much closer to someone like Allen.”

ESPN’s Dan Graziano also noted that Purdy’s extension could potentially surpass \$55 million per year, which would reflect both his current production and projected future value to the team.

If they view Brock Purdy as a quarterback worth over \$300 million, they’ll need to pay him accordingly. If not, they risk entering a difficult spot when it comes to their long-term quarterback plans—a dilemma no NFL team wants to face.

While Purdy may not be considered among the league’s elite, his production has been solid since taking over in 2022. He’s thrown for 9,518 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions, making a strong case for a significant contract extension.
