West Lafayette, IN –Purdue University announced today that men’s basketball head coach Matt Painter has signed a five-year contract extension, keeping him in West Lafayette through the 2030 season. The deal comes on the heels of back-to-back Big Ten titles and the program’s first Final Four appearance in over four decades.
Painter, who has led the Boilermakers since 2005, has now committed to what will be at least 25 years at the helm of one of the Big Ten’s most consistent basketball powerhouses.
“It’s an incredible honor to continue leading this program,” said Painter in a press release. “Purdue is home for me. I’m grateful for the support of our administration, our student-athletes, and the best fans in college basketball. We’re not done yet.”

The extension reportedly includes performance-based incentives tied to postseason success, academic benchmarks, and recruiting milestones. While terms were not officially disclosed, sources told Boilermaker Digest that the new deal will make Painter one of the top five highest-paid coaches in the Big Ten.

Athletic Director Mike Bobinski praised Painter’s impact both on and off the court.
“Matt has built a culture of excellence that defines Purdue Basketball,” said Bobinski. “He represents everything we value in a leader—integrity, competitiveness, and a commitment to developing student-athletes. This extension ensures stability and continued success for years to come.”
Painter boasts a career record of 471–215 at Purdue and has taken the Boilermakers to 16 NCAA Tournaments in 20 seasons, including a Final Four berth in 2024 and an Elite Eight appearance in 2025. He has developed numerous NBA talents and was instrumental in the rise of two-time National Player of the Year Zach Edey, who now plays professionally.
With a top-10 recruiting class incoming and key veterans returning, expectations are sky-high once again in West Lafayette. Painter, never one to shy away from pressure, welcomes the challenge.
“The goal has always been to hang banners and develop men for life,” he said. “We’re just getting started.”
