Buffalo, NY — In a shocking turn of events, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has been suspended for six months by the NFL after an internal investigation revealed he had placed bets on multiple NFL games during the 2024 season.

The league announced the suspension Wednesday morning, citing a “clear violation of the NFL’s gambling policy.” The statement emphasized that while there was no evidence Allen bet on games involving the Bills, he had placed “a series of small wagers on league contests through a third-party proxy.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a press conference, “The integrity of the game is paramount. While we found no indications of point-shaving or competitive interference, players are strictly prohibited from betting on NFL games under any circumstances.”

According to sources close to the investigation, Allen reportedly wagered on five games through an offshore betting site, all of which occurred during Buffalo’s bye week and included matchups not involving the AFC East.

The league noted Allen was cooperative throughout the investigation and has issued a public apology:

“I take full responsibility for my actions,” Allen said in a statement posted to his social media. “I made a mistake, and I understand the importance of protecting the integrity of our game. I will use this time to reflect, grow, and come back better for my team and my fans.”

The Buffalo Bills, stunned by the announcement, issued a brief statement of support, acknowledging Allen’s contrition and vowing to “move forward as a team.” Backup quarterback Kyle Allen is expected to take first-team reps during training camp in Allen’s absence.

The six-month ban, which takes effect immediately, will cause Allen to miss the entirety of training camp and the first four games of the 2025 regular season, but he will be eligible to return in Week 5.

This is the highest-profile betting-related suspension since the NFL introduced updated gambling protocols in 2023, following the league’s growing partnerships with sportsbook companies.

Fans and analysts alike are reeling from the news, with some calling the punishment too light, while others view it as a necessary but fair decision to uphold league standards without permanently damaging a marquee player’s career.
