BREAKING: Red Sox Amazing Tip Drill Catch Robs Tigers Star of Home Run

The Detroit Tigers defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-5 on Wednesday night, but it was the Red Sox who delivered the game’s most unusual highlight.

With the score tied at 5 in the bottom of the seventh, Tigers lefty slugger Kerry Carpenter stepped up to the plate with one out and no one on. He appeared to crush a go-ahead home run off Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks—but Boston’s outfielders had other plans.

That’s right—outfielders, plural.

Right fielder Wilyer Abreu leapt for the ball but couldn’t secure it, as it bounced off his glove and back into play. Fortunately for Boston, center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela was in position and snagged the ball out of the air, turning it into one of the most unusual catches you’ll see in an MLB game. The play looked more like a basketball-style tip drill than a baseball highlight.

The drama continued into the ninth, when Detroit’s Justyn-Henry Malloy hit a line drive single that brought home Andy Ibáñez for the walk-off win.

With the victory, the Tigers completed a sweep of Boston and improved to 29-15, maintaining their lead atop the AL Central.

Detroit has Thursday off before beginning a three-game series in Toronto on Friday. After that, they’ll travel to St. Louis for a three-game interleague set with the Cardinals. The Tigers return to Comerica Park on May 22 for a four-game series against the Cleveland Guardians.
